Content Management Systems are one of the hottest developments in Web Technology.
The concept is fascinating. Conventional web sites, like the one you are viewing right this second, are designed as static pages in the form of html files which reside on a server. When a user clicks on a link to one of those pages, the server delivers that html file and it displays in your browser. Unless you are my mom or dad, this is undoubtedly not the first web site you've visited so you understand this concept. (Just joking mom and dad.)
Content Management Systems function as a portal
- CMS's are called dynamic web sites
- CMS's are powered by a database.
- The framework for delivering the content is a Template which is a file written in HTML and PHP then styled with CSS.
- When a user clicks on a link in a dynamic web site, the PHP engine goes to the database and retrieves the information requested, then displays it in the user's browser
In the beginning...
Once upon a time, there was a realization for the need of dynamic web sites. More people were surfing the internet.
- Users wanted more interaction from their web experience.
- Web site owners needed the ability to update their sites themselves.
- Larger businesses and corporations needed to have many people, without experience in writing html, to update their web sites.
In order to have all of this functionality in a web site, it used to cost thousands and thousands of dollars. While that may be a drop in the bucket to large corporations, smaller businesses who needed that functionality couldn't afford it.
Open Source To The Rescue
PHP or hypertext pre-processor is an open-source, server-side scripting language. This means that PHP is not owned by any person or corporation like Microsoft or Adobe. Instead it is a language composed by the people, for the people. There are many people out there who dedicate a lot of time to composing the PHP language. While this may benefit their work, it also benefits the rest of us.

Nowadays, there are open-source cms communities. They are getting more and more popular. Some of the most popular include Drupal, Joomla and Wordpress. I have made custom templates and themes for each of these.
